Focus on Federal Compliance
Preventing Health Care Fraud and Abuse

Overview

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the Department of Health and Human Services reported that approximately fourteen percent of health care claims were paid inappropriately due to fraud and abuse.   That report focused on $23 billion in overpayments made in Medicare fee-for-service arrangements, with physicians accounting for 21.68 percent of these improper payments.  For these reasons, the detection and elimination of health care fraud and abuse is a top priority of federal law enforcement.
