Spotlight on Patient Safety
Reducing Medical Errors through CRM

Overview

Errors that harm patients are seldom the result of a simple mistake by one individual.  Rather, they usually result from the breakdown of an entire sequence of events involving the actions of two or more individuals who are supposed to function as a team.  Because of this breakdown in teamwork, those steps at which the error would normally be corrected fail to function because the previous steps malfunctioned, and the whole system collapses.
Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Identify the elements of crew resource management (CRM).
2. Apply principles of CRM to the health care environment.
3. Discuss the proper use of checklists and protocols in reducing medical errors.
4. Develop a plan for utilizing CRM and protocols in their medical practices.
