Risk Management Rounds Radiology
Overview
Radiologists are sued for a number of reasons. The most frequent allegation is a missed or delayed diagnosis. The Physician Insurers Association of America found that diagnostic errors comprised 62 percent of claims brought against radiologists, and 76 percent of claims that resulted in indemnity payment. Clearly, errors in diagnosis are a significant problem for radiology. Other sources of error include complications with diagnostic procedures; improper care and treatment; falls; equipment failures; adverse reactions to contrast media; and other less frequent problems.
