Risk Management Rounds Pediatrics Plus
Overview
In addition to the standard risk management concerns affecting every other primary care physician, you as a pediatrician must contend with several additional hurdles. Many of your patients, especially the very young ones, can’t tell you where it hurts. Most of your patient communications are channeled through an intermediary parent or guardian. Not only can the intermediary’s emotions and biases sometimes become a hindrance but, especially where child abuse is involved, the intermediary may provide you with false information and actively interfere with your attempts to care for the child. Then there’s the heart-wrenching matter of reporting suspected child abuse. While you’re legally obligated to do so, it’s not always clear whether abuse is likely or merely a possibility. And failing to report your concerns through proper channels and procedures could void the legal protections that would otherwise shield you from liability. This course addresses these and other pediatric-related issues.
